About Us

A typical street in the beautiful city of Cusco in Peru.

The Zocalo-Trading Company

Was set up in 2003 by ourselves Frank and Charmaine.
For many years we have been travelling around the world to places such as Turkey, Morroco, Asia, Europe, South America to name a few and always there is an opportunity to both have fun and combine it with a little business.
Whilst travelling you always meet many people and gain many ideas.
We travelled across South America for 3 months in 2003 .
The journey was an eventful adventure and not unsimilar to an endurance test
Trying to get from Chile to Mexico in 3 months was quite a feat but also an awe inspiring and memorable moment that will live with us for the rest of our days.

3 months is nothing really more than an insight to a completely different and fascinating way of life. Along the way we met so many wonderful people and went to so many interesting places.
Many of these towns and villages are in remote areas and can often be extremely difficult to get in or out of .
Roads can often be treacherous and often nothing more than just a dusty mountain path, slippery and thousands of feet up in the clouds and too close to the edge of the road at too fast speeds.
It,s a harsh reminder of how hard life is when you keep seeing shrines at the edge of the roadsides at every couple of hundred yards that point out where some vehicle left the road and sailed over the edge.
It is moments like this that humbled us most when I see the local people still smiling and just getting on with it.
After several trips to various parts of the globe we decided to import some of the beautiful crafts we found along the way...
Many of our products are from the people who actually make them. This way we can be sure that they get the price that they want and we can practice fair trade.

Whilst on our travels we came across many beautiful, colourful items of clothing which we sell through our other sites
THE PONCHO SHOP

and our alpaca scarves and shawls at
ZOCALO ALPACA

This is me with some of the local kids who live on the worlds largest salt flats in Bolivia.

Our aim in life is to be happy and to try to bring some joy to others. To enjoy a way of life that appeals to us both. To meet people and see new places and make a living along the way.

This is one of the poorer folk in Cusco. A cold and harsh place in the winter months.

We also want our customers to be happy and come back to us time again.
The only way anyone can achieve this is by keeping high standards and listening to what people have to say. This is important as this helps us to help you.

I know its hard to believe but this is actually an island floating on a lake and it,s made of reeds. There are about 300 such lakes as these that float on the worlds highest and biggest lake in the world. Lake Titicaca in Peru.

It is important that we don't forget the people that breed the alpacas , shear them, collect the wool and then turn it into beautiful garments and all in the harshest and wonderous of environments.

These boats are sitting at the edge of the lake where there is a build up of green algae due to the stillness of the lake.

Travelling to these places humbles a person very quickly when you realise the vast distances and heights. Crossing some of the hardest places in the world is often a daily necessity for many of these people in order to survive.
